My Keto One Month Progress Report

I'm so excited that I get to check with you guys on my one month Keto weightless progress. I didn't find out about the Ketogenic diet until March of this year. I was instantly hooked! For years I would workout, but my diet was always keeping me back from seeing real, lasting results. My previous diet also didn't address other health concerns that I had. I tried eating whatever I wanted, but in moderation. I tried portion control. I tried the smoothie cleanse. I tried to be vegan, vegetarian, and I even tried the Whole 30 diet. None of these diets were sustainable for me. That's not to say that those diets won't work for you; we all have to find what our bodies best respond to. When I decided to give Keto a shot, my entire body was changed.

Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet

In the 30 days since I've switched to the a Ketogenic lifestyle, I've seen some pretty amazing benefits.

Weight loss

This benefit has bee the most obvious one of them all. My clothes fit differently; better, some even a little bigger. I can finally fit a pair of jeans that have been hiding in the back of my closet. My family and friends are noticing my weight loss as well. The weight loss is showing up more noticeably in my face and in my stomach. I don't have a set day when I weigh myself (it used to be a bad obsession), but I do try to check in weekly to monitor my progress. I use the MyFitness Pal app to track my macros and my weight loss. Since switching to Keto I've lost 10 pounds in one month (5/21-6/18)!

Acanthosis Nigricans

About a year or two ago, I began noticing dark spots on my upper lip, arm pits, and my back. I thought it was hyper pigmentation, but after switching up my skincare regimen, I learned that wasn't the case. My skin was getting worse and I knew it was something internally wrong. I remember stalking Google trying to figure out what my body was trying to tell me. I came across several articles that described exactly what I had and basically I self-diagnosed myself with Acanthosis Nigricans. I've talked briefly in a previous post (you can read that here) about Acanthosis Nigricans.

"The skin changes of Acanthosis Nigricans typically occur in people who are obese or have diabetes." www.mayoclinic.org

The words "obese" and "diabetes" jumped off the pages! I knew going Keto had to be more for me than looking good in a bikini or a pair of jeans. I needed to get into prevention mode asap.

For 30 days I monitored my blood sugar three times per day. I learned all I could about Keto and how being obese and pre-diabetic was based on my high carb diet. I never had a problem hitting the gym; it was the fuel I was putting in my body. The results were quick. My skin went back to normal within two weeks!

Pre-Keto and about a week before my period would start every month I would breakout in this ugly rash. I would breakout on my arms, legs, or my back. I had no clue where it was coming from. Acanthosis Nigricans, plus this pre-menstrual skin rash and I was beyond frustrated. Since switching to the Ketogenic diet, I don't get the pre-menstrual rash!

Other Benefits

My appetite isn't as crazy as it used to be. My portions have gotten smaller and I'm fuller longer. Also, I'm not as fatigued as I used to be. I used to want a nap everyday, but now I don't need one. A typical day for me looks like this:

  • Intermittent Fasting until about 1 or 2pm

  • Start the day with coffee and water

  • Atkins frozen meal

  • Snack (Atkins bar, fruit cup w/ whip cream, or a protein shake)

  • Dinner (either a Pinterest inspired meal or chicken wings; I love chicken wings)

I'm still a novice in this whole Ketogenic way of life thing. I'm still learning about macros and getting my body away from relying heavily on carbs to more fat and protein.

Will I continue the Ketogenic diet? Would I recommend the Ketogenic diet? Are there any cons to the Ketogenic diet? Yes, yes, and in my opinion, no. The Ketogenic diet is sustainable for me. It takes thought and planning out, but isn't that the point? The convenience of eating whatever I wanted is how I got to where I am now. My plan is to continue a low carb, high fat way of living. I would recommend Keto to anyone. Especially if you're pre-diabetic, obese, or already a diabetic. I strongly encourage you to do your research and consult your physician before making the switch. The only con I can think of (but it's probably not really a con) is the adjustment period that your body goes through. The carb withdrawls are real and so is the Keto flu.

All in all, I'm pleased with my first Keto 30 day progress report. I'll be posting more on my progress and hopefully explain in more detail what the Ketogenic diet is.
